{"id":129,"date":"2014-11-18T05:06:50","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T05:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/?p=129"},"modified":"2014-11-18T05:18:03","modified_gmt":"2014-11-18T05:18:03","slug":"yosemite-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/?p=129","title":{"rendered":"Yosemite National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7515.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7515-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7515\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7515-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7515-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNo temple made with hands can compare with Yosemite.\u00a0 Every rock in its walls seems to glow with life.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>John Muir, 1869<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Every national park we have explored has been outstanding, yet I now know why John Muir\u2019s effusive prose regarding Yosemite is not exaggeration.\u00a0 John Muir was the naturalist who is credited with inspiring political leaders to establish the national park system.\u00a0 Abraham Lincoln signed legislation to protect Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove in 1864.\u00a0 Muir hosted President Theodore Roosevelt here in 1903 and this led to the expansion of Yosemite as a National Park in 1906 (formerly under the control of the State of California). \u00a0 We traced Muir\u2019s footsteps and explored the valley and Mariposa Grove (home of the gigantic sequoias) November 9 &#8211; 10, 2014.\u00a0 This was just a brief introduction to the park and we could have spent many more days exploring and hope to return in the future to do just that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7642.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-132\" src=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7642-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7642\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7642-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7642-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mariposa Grove \u00a0is a majestic grove of giant sequoia trees. \u00a0The nearby picture is of the kids in front of the Grizzly Giant which is estimated to be 2,700 years old and is the fifth largest sequoia tree.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7577.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-133 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7577-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7577\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7577-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7577-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We attempted to see a sunrise from Glacier Point which overlooks Yosemite Valley. \u00a0We rose before dawn to drive the 40+ miles up to the point but I calculated the drive time wrong and we arrived after sunrise. \u00a0It was still spectacular and the picture shows the sun revealing the valley and its beautiful fall hues. \u00a0To the left is the overlook where Roosevelt and Muir posed for a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>In summer, there is a nice concession stand at the Point\u00a0and how \u00a0I wish the old hotel was still around (it burned down in 1969 and was never rebuilt) &#8211; it would be incredible to sit on the balcony and watch sunrise without the long, winding drive up 7,214 feet. \u00a0 The drive was fun and at one point the temperature had dropped from 46 to 26 degrees and then it warmed up again as we approached the summit. \u00a0 The drive is not for anyone challenged with motion sickness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-134 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7578-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7578\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7578-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7578-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sublime view of Half Dome from Glacier Point was well worth the drive.<\/p>\n<p>For those who like the impressive historic hotels of our National Parks, the Ahwahnee Hotel should not be missed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-135\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7540.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-135\" src=\"http:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7540-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Ahwahnee Hotel\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7540-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wanderingadams.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_7540-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ahwahnee Hotel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was a beautiful, warm afternoon when we arrived and we enjoyed the back yard with views of the hotel and the surrounding rocks. \u00a0 The interior is equally as impressive with multiple large fireplaces to cozy up and let your cares fall away.<\/p>\n<p>We thoroughly enjoyed our visit\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;
